About
I’m Jo Hemsley. I’ve been making boat covers in and around Chichester for over 20 years now. Dell Quay Covers started as my wish to have an independent cover making business coincided with the opportunity to occupy premises at Dell Quay Yacht yard.
Busy and popular, it’s a boatyard superbly located at the top of Chichester harbour, 2 miles from the A27. My aim is to provide a bespoke service to the local area at reasonable cost specialising in custom made covers.
Services
Replacement Spray Hoods
If you would like your spray hood replaced using the existing frames then we need to visit your boat 2-3 times.
Unfortunately we can’t just work from your old cover as it may have become stretched and distorted over time.
If in serviceable condition we can re user your existing fittings, or supply new ones; these are usually lift the dot studs, press studs, turnbuckles, hooks, lacing buttons, or a combination of any of these.
Our replacement spray hoods are made from acrylic canvas with a PU coating for great water resistance. This keeps the hoods breathable, whilst still providing excellent stability in sunlight.
The windows are made from..
How we work
On our first visit to your boat we make and fit a plastic template over your existing steel frame. This ensures your new spray hood is going to be a perfect fit.
Then back at our loft in Dell Quay we’ll make the spray hood, then arrange with you to have it fitted.
If your spray hood needs some final adjustments then we may need to arrange another fitting, but this is pretty rare!
Spray hood Prices
Using your existing framework means your spray hood is likely to cost between £500 – £650. This of course varies between boats, and material
FAQs
Can you copy my old sprayhood?
This is not advisable as your old one will have distorted over the years, any imperfections will be copied into the new one so it is very likely not to fit. It is also impossible to position any deck fittings accurately to within a mm.
How do I wash my covers?
Do not jet wash, this damages the fibres. Do not use bleach or detergent. Hose and brush regularly with fresh water. For more ingrained dirt use warm water max 30 degrees and a soft soap solution. Rinse thoroughly.
For more serious cases or they are too big to handle we can arrange for your sails/ covers to go to a specialist sail laundry.
Can the windows in my sprayhood be replaced? If so would it help if I removed the old ones?
Yes we can replace the windows but please do not remove the old ones as this makes it really difficult to put the new ones in.
How do I know when my uv strip un my genoa needs replacing?
The strip will be badly faded having done its job of protecting the sail, it may be tearing in places and the stitching missing.
How does a lazyjack sailcover work with a loose footed mainsail.
The sailcover would have an integral foot rope which slides into the boom track taking the place of the missing foot rope in the sail.
My boat upholstery needs renewing. Can you use the existing foam?
If the foam is in good condition then yes. If it is becoming old then it is wise to replace it. The corners and edges will be worn, in order to recover them we have to tailor to a misshapen cushion which then means that you lose the opportunity to have the cushion fit properly.
Is there an alternative to vinyl for cockpit cushions?
We find that the acrylic canvas used for sprayhoods etc. offers a waterproof and friendlier feel for cockpit cushions, and even saloon cushions when the interior seating is likely to get wet from sails and clothing.
I need an overall cover for my RIB which is kept on the water, how could a cover be secured?
If your RIB has a contoured rubbing strake then we can use “ribhooks” with bungee to hold the cover on.
